A30 crash: Drivers severely injured after U-turn at Hayle

Collision near Hayle shut road for a round three hours yesterday.

Two drivers suffered "severe" injuries in a crash on the A30 after one of them tried to perform a U-turn, police have said.

The collision at Hayle shut the road for a round three hours yesterday.

Emergency services including Cornwall Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene at Loggans, Hayle, at around 3pm after a grey Mercedes and blue Honda were involved in the incident.

Devon and Cornwall Police had said a woman had to be cut from a Honda her vehicle by firefighters and she was taken to hospital with leg injuries and that a man driving the Mercedes sustained head injuries in the crash.

Now police have said they believe one of the vehicles was trying to perform a U turn - and want to remind drivers this is a very dangerous manoeuvre which has caused a number of fatalities over the years.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 3pm on the 22nd September 2020, Police, Fire and Ambulance were called to the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the A30, near to Loggans, Hayle.

"Two vehicles were involved with both drivers sustaining severe injuries. It would appear that one of the vehicles was trying to perform a U turn.

"Both drivers were taken to Treliske Hospital, Truro and the road was closed for some time whilst an investigation took place. Diversions were directed through Connor Downs.

"Once a full examination of the scene had been completed, the road was re-opened. Police would like to thank the public for their patience whilst the road was closed.

"They would also like to take the opportunity to remind all road users that the ‘No U turn’ signs have been placed on the carriageway for serious safety reasons.

"It is a very dangerous manoeuvre which has caused a number of fatalities over the years.

"Thanks is also extended to those members of public who stopped to help and administer first aid. Your assistance was very much appreciated.

"Police would like to hear from any witnesses to the collision, particularly those who may have captured Dashcam footage. Please phone 101, quoting log number 506 of 220920."
