Shoplifter arrested after coming back forn his bike

A SHOPLIFTER who left his bike at a shop after being spotted by staff putting items in his bag was arrested when he returned to collect it.

Damian Shears, 23, of Forth Scol, Redruth, also threatened to beat up staff at the Spar Shop in Foundry Square, Hayle during the incident.

At Truro Magistrates' Court he pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol and crisps from the shop, to possessing 1.3 grammes of cannabis resin and to a bail offence.

Alison May, prosecuting, said staff at the shop checked CCTV when he seemed to be taking a suspiciously long time there. He was seen putting items into a bag, taking it outside and leaving it and then returning to the shop.

After threatening staff he left again, leaving behind his bicycle, which the staff held on to. When he returned for it he was abusive again and the police were called.

He was found in possession of the drug.

He had a previous conviction in 2009 for a public order offence.

Dieter Kehler, his solicitor, said there were signs of good in him to be worked on.

He had stolen because he wanted to get drunk. He had a problem with alcohol and had been hanging around with the wrong crowd. But he now wanted to sort out his somewhat chaotic lifestyle.

He smoked cannabis and it was only a small amount found on him. The drug was not a problem to him generally.

Shears was sent to an attendance centre for 36 hours and told to pay £15 costs.
