87-year-old provided with daily hot meals thanks to community kindness
Published by Sarah Yeoman at 11:26am 20th May 2020. (Updated at 12:18pm 20th May 2020)
An elderly lady is being provided with daily hot meals in Camborne, after a supermarket worker noticed she was only buying tinned food.
The 87-year-old was visiting Aldi to stock up on tins as she has no access to a microwave or cooker and does not have any family locally.
Luckily a member of staff, Richard Allen, noticed her situation and stepped in to help.
He contacted local cafe Miss Molly's Tea Room and asked if they could cook for the lady, so she could eat hot, fresh meals.
They are now delivery daily meals to her, and Richard even delivers the lady a menu each week so she can choose what she would like.
One of the cafe workers shared the kind gesture to the Covid-19 Mutual Aid - Camborne, Pool and Redruth group on Facebook.
"I just thought I'd share a lovely story of people going above and beyond at this rather grim time.
"Aldi in Camborne have the most amazing staff, they noticed a very elderly customer was only buying tinned food from the beginning of lockdown.
"The manager asked if she'd like some fresh stuff but she said no as she has no oven or microwave.
"He then found out she doesn't have any family at all locally, so bless him, he rang our cafe and arranged to have hot meals delivered to her.
"He has also fixed her doorbell and offered to settle her bill if necessary (it's not) so this is a shout out to Richard, manager at Aldi Camborne who noticed a customer in need two weeks ago and stepped up to help out. You sir, are bloody amazing."
Leander Connaughton, Miss Molly's Team Room
The cafe is supporting other vulnerable people in the community, and feeding around 80 people every Sunday by providing them with a roast dinner.
"The lady was eating out of cold tins and Richard realised what was happening.
"He approached us and asked if we could do meals on wheels. We're doing it seven days a week for her now.
"Richard even takes her a menu once a week so she can choose what she wants."
Rosemary Johnson, Miss Molly's Tea Room

“Credit goes to our store team who recognised that someone was in need and that we could help them.
"It’s a difficult time and ultimately what we want is for people to feel safe and have access to the groceries they need.”
Richard Allen, Deputy Store Manager at Aldi’s Camborne store
“We are all immensely proud of Richard and the team at our Camborne store who, just like their colleagues nationally, are working tirelessly to support their customers and communities.”
Cheryl Buckingham, Store Manager at Aldi
