Hayle residents mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme

A small service was held this morning

Hayle came together this morning to remember the centenary of the start of the Somme conflict.

Hayle Royal British Legion members, Hayle mayor Nick Farrar, deputy mayor Clive Polkinghorne and a group of around 25 residents met at the Hayle War Memorial to observe the occasion.

At 7:28am whistle was blown three times, followed by two minutes silence which concluded with a short service.

Afterwards families laid tributes and memories at the memorial of relatives involved.

The service was especially important as on this day 100 years ago a Hayle resident, Samuel James Bailey, 29 years old of Mount Pleasant lost his life fighting with The Devonshire Regiment 2nd battalion on the Somme.

Samuel's name is inscribed both on the Thiepval Memorial and the Hayle War Memorial.
