SPORTING organisations in Cornwall are to benefit by more than £500,000 of National Lottery funding in a major boost to grassroots sports groups in the county.

Hayle Tennis Club will receive £46,132 to create a new clubhouse to replace their ageing portable building which was donated to the club in 1996 by Alfred McAlpine following the completion of a local road building project.

The money comes from Sport England's Inspired Facilities fund and 11 sports clubs in the county will benefit, with the money being used for among other things improving facilities from new playing surfaces to floodlights and better changing rooms.

The Cornwall groups are: Morwenstow Community Centre £50,000; Mount Ambrose Cricket Club – £50,000; Camborne Rugby Club – £40,000; Saltash Sailing Club – £50,000; Truro City Bowls Club – £50,000; Truro River Rowing Club – £50,000; Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club – £49,920; St Newlyn East Parish Council – £49,161; Hayle Lawn Tennis Club – £46,132; Camborne Bowling Club – £40,000; Mullion Gymnastics Centre – £26,800.

Hayle's acting club chair Lesley Townend said: "This is a tremendous boost for our club. The old building has served the club well for 17 years, but last year's exceptionally wet weather brought it to a critical state, so news of our successful bid has come at the perfect time."

Sport England chair Nick Bitel said: "A year on from the Olympics, it's inspiring to see how our investment is transforming sporting facilities in hundreds of communities.

"The great news for sports clubs across the country is that we're putting an extra £40 million into Inspired Facilities so many more projects will benefit in the coming years."

More details on individual club cash awards in the news pages.

Bids will be accepted for the next round of Inspired Facilities funding from the October 21 2013. Find out more at: www.sportengland.org/inspiredfacilities
