Drivers spotted doing u-turns on A30 Hayle bypass

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 1:07pm 3rd July 2019. (Updated at 3:37pm 3rd July 2019)

Drivers have been spotted doing u-turns on a notorious stretch of the A30 in west Cornwall.

At least three people were seen performing the dangerous manoeuvre on the Hayle bypass on Wednesday lunchtime.

It was to avoid the volume of traffic queuing and one was even faced with a horse box travelling in the opposite direction.

Inrix Traffic and Travel is reporting that there is slow traffic westbound between the B3301 Carwin Rise and A3074 Nut Lane.

Further down there is also queuing traffic on the A30 at the Long Rock bypass because of roadworks in the area.

It is affecting anyone heading towards Penzance.

It comes after several campaigns to stop u-turns in the Hayle bypass area.

Casey Wearne from Newlyn has been campaigning ever since her grandparents were caught in a crash.

She told Pirate FM how the couple had to be pulled from their car after it caught fire back in 2017.

A petition was set up calling for a central barrier to be installed - that raked in more than 4,000 signatures.

You can find it here.

Speaking at the time, she said:

"They're just really, really lucky to be alive. We're blessed their alive.

"We just want to prevent this from happening again. We're not the first family and unfortunately, I don't think we're going to be the last unless something is done.

"It's just heart-breaking to hear. Obviously it hits home when it's your own family. You hear about it all the time, unfortunately, on that road but when it's you own family, it just really, really hit me.

"Now that things are settling down, I can't just sit here and not do anything so that's the reason I've stated the petition".
